The best of the Secondhand Summer trend report 2016

June 21, 2016

I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but there’s a lot happening on the high street.  Styles are changing, colours are brighter, more vivid.  It must be Summer; finally!

Before you go leaping out in the sunshine wielding your credit card to fund a new wardrobe, perhaps we might tempt you to try a new way of shopping?  Have you considered not buying new clothes and instead adapting, swapping and purchasing some unique additions from vintage or charity shops?  We give you three current trends, and how you can achieve it – secondhand.

At Frankie & Ruby we firmly believe that once you know the rules of what to wear in terms of colour, shape and style, then you can shop anywhere.  And if you can shop anywhere, then we think you’d be hard pushed for a more enjoyable past time than rummaging around a few charity shops.  Go armed with your colour and shape rules, and you’ll not go wrong – you can create a great new wardrobe for just a few pounds.

Here we’ve given you three current trends, and examples of similar styles we’ve found online from some of our favourite second hand sources.

  1. Baring the shoulders

Wearing clothes that show the shoulders is a great trend, as anyone can do it.  If you’re a curvy hourglass, go for a shoulder cut out that is also curvy, or a fabric that just slips from one shoulder.  For straight body shapes, try more of an angular cut out, or wide boat neck style.

2.  A rainbow to choose from

After the dark tones of winter, summer style always lifts and refreshes with bright, clear colours.  One of the trends this season is to mix colours, wear rainbows and have fun with colours and accessories.  This dress from Chloe is a head to toe rainbow, but to make it more day to day wearable, opt for a bag or an accessory in rainbow colours – this is really one for people with Spring or Winter colouring to carry off the bright vivid colours.

3.  Striped Sailor tops

I’ve been seeing stripes everywhere, on everything.  The stripe top seems to be the classic must-have.  Great if you’re a triangle or straight body shape.  If you’re an inverted triangle, try stripes on the bottom half of the body.

Striped tops are great for widening and rebalancing narrow shoulders – Boden have them in lots of different colours (left).  On the right is a Boden one on eBay for £4.99.

Stripe skirts are great for rebalancing wider shoulders – the one on the right is on eBay starting at £9.99.
