Hats & Handbags!
Accessorising with a hat or a handbag can instantly take you from mainstream smart to Ascot ready amazing. Knowing what is going to suit you is all down to understanding your personal key rules, and that is no different for hats and handbags. Here’s a few things you need to think about before buying a new hat or a bag;
If you know your colours, then buying anything to wear becomes a million times easier - you’ll be working from a carefully chosen palette of colours that is designed to compliment your natural colouring and work with all the other colours you wear. Buying a hat or a bag is then easy because your chosen item will go with everything else you own and really suit you. And if this season’s ‘must have’ colour is so bright that you’re worried you might stop traffic (or worse land planes), then incorporating that colour into a hat or a bag (as long as it’s a good tone for you) can instantly update your look with very little effort.
Another consideration is size. If you’re a petite size 8, a large saucer of a hat is completely going to swap your frame, while perhaps a dainty fascinator might look more to your scale. Similarly, if you’re a tall curvy girl clutching a tiny little purse is also going to look wrong. Pick your accessories to match your scale - if you’re petite look for small dainty details, and if you’re taller or broader, move your accessories up a scale to mirror your own frame size.
You might also want to think about shape too. If your an athletic type with a straight body shape then hats with sharper and more defined angles will suit you better. If you’re voluptuously curvy, then look for curvy softer lines on your hat. The same is true for bags - more of an angular shape (like a square or a rectangle) for the athletic frames, and more curvy for the ruben-esques.
Choosing a style is very personal, but think about how you can reflect something of who you are. Natural girls might choose bags with loads of texture or made from a natural fabric. Romantic floaty ladies might like a BoHo style of bag with some added lace or floral detail. Girls who like minimal looks but with maximum style might like a designer bag with some sparkly embellishments. Think about how much you like what you’re looking at and will you still like it this time next year? Bags and hats can also be interesting talking points - you can be perhaps more creative with your choice of hat or bag than you might be with the rest of your outfit - but if you’re going to go all out outrageous, just make that the one focus of your entire outfit.
You don’t have to stick to the high street to find the hat or the bag you want. You can shop in charity shops, recycling centres, on ebay, preloved, or etsy to find something a bit more unusual. And if you want something completely unique, a professional milliner can create something amazing and personal to you.
